Attendance Policy:
Absences:
If a child is going to be absent, an email to the teacher is acceptable as an excuse note.
Notes: Upon returning to school, a written note from parents must be sent to the teacher (email is sufficient). The note should include
• The student’s name
• The dates he or she was absent
• The reason for the absence
• The parent’s signature
Absences not explained by notes will be recorded as unexcused. A student attending only part of a school day must be here for at least half of a school day to be marked present. A list of excused absences are listed in the Student/Parent handbook on page 35.
To request an excused absence due to special educational experiences, a form must be submitted, in advance of the absence, to the principal for approval. Form is available in the front office.
Arrivals:
Brier Creek Elementary School day begins at 8:45 AM. If dropping students off, please do so between 8:45 and 9:15. Any child dropped off before 8:40 is left unattended and is a safety concern. Parents could be reported to the school social
worker for habitual early drop-offs. Doors will be unlocked at 8:40 am. Students may not enter the building until 8:45.
Tardies:
Students entering the building after the 9:05 bell are considered tardy. If students are tardy, they report to the office to receive a pass before going to class. Parents must accompany their child to the office to sign them in. Please make every effort to have your child in class on time. Valuable instructional time is lost due to excessive tardies.
Dismissal:
The dismissal bell rings at 3:45 PM. Students will not be dismissed between 3:30 and 3:45. Teachers are instructing until the end of the day. Students should only be checked out early due to exceptional circumstances. Valuable instructional
time is lost due to early check outs. If you have an appointment that requires you to pick your child up before dismissal, please do so prior to 3:30. Students will not be dismissed after 3:30pm. Students called for dismissal will be done ONLY when the parent is physically in the building—we do not honor “calling ahead”.
Change of Transportation Plans
• If a student is carpooling home with a friend, students must bring in a note from the parents.
• Students are no longer permitted to ride any school bus other than the one to which they are assigned.
• If a child does not have a note he or she will not be permitted to change their transportation.
• Parents should call the school with any last-minute transportation changes no later than 3:15 PM.
Volunteering:
If you are interested in volunteering, you will need to fill out an application. The fifth grade will be going on a two-night, three-day trip to Washington D.C. so volunteers will be needed. Volunteering applications are online at www.wcpss.net/volunteer. Applications can only be completed in our Media Center. If you plan to help out with chaperoning our D.C. trip or chaperone any field trips or work with students on any grade level, you must be cleared in Wake County. Clearance can take up to three weeks.
Inclement Weather:
Inclement Weather Conditions
In case of snow or other potentially hazardous weather or emergency situations, a decision may be made to close or delay
school. If the weather is bad enough to make a decision the day or night before, WCPSS will do so in time for the 11 p.m.
newscasts. Otherwise, at 3:30 a.m. school system transportation personnel drive the bus routes to check firsthand on local
conditions. Between 3:30 and 4:30 a.m., the transportation director consults with the National Weather Service, local weather
forecasters and the Highway Patrol. The director then calls the superintendent with an update at 4:45 a.m., and a decision is
made. WCPSS will immediately alert the media, call school principals, and post a notice to the system's website and to the email
notification service. Schools typically update the school's main phone line with a message to reflect the closing or delay
status as well. All delays or early closing announcements will be made in terms of hours: one hour late, two hours early, etc.
Never assume that schools will be closed, have a delayed opening or close early. Schools will open on their regular schedule
unless otherwise announced.
Early Dismissal due to Inclement Weather
1. The first notification of early dismissal is made through the media.
2. If you are concerned over your child’s well being because of weather you may come to school to pick him or her up.
3. All children remaining at school dismissal time, and who normally ride the bus, will be sent home on the bus.
Please do not call the school office because telephone lines are kept open for emergency information. Please discuss emergency dismissal plans with your child so he/she will know what to do on the event of an early dismissal from school.
If WCPSS schools are cancelled for the day, school make-up days are typically scheduled on Saturdays from 8:45-12:30. Lunch is not served on these days.
Student Birthdays:
Students' birthdays are recognized on the morning announcements. If parents wish to bring in a birthday snack, only healthy alternate snacks are allowed. It must be commercially made and may only be distributed to the entire class at lunch, in the cafeteria. Please be aware of students' allergies and dietary situations. Sweet treats are no longer allowed due to health and allergy concerns. The singing of Happy Birthday in the cafeteria is not permitted. Birthday parties are not held at school. Outside birthday party invitations must be mailed from home-not distributed from school.
